3/4 c. butter or margarine
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 eggs
3/4 c. buttermilk

Directions:
  • Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  • Mash bananas with lemon juice in separate bowl.

American Sandwich Bread

Contributed by Tara Taylor, Concord 1st Ward

Ingredients:

3 1/2 c flour (substitute 1 c wheat flour if desire)
2 t salt
1 pkg dry active yeast
1 c milk
1/4 c water
3 T melted butter
3 T honey

Directions:
  • Mix flour, salt and yeast together in bowl
  • Heat milk, water, melted butter and honey to about 110 degrees F (Using warm milk and water is key for proper rising time. If the water is too hot, it will kill the yeast, and it is too cold, the dough will take much longer to rise.)
  • Pour liquids into dry ingredients and mix on low for about 1 minute and then on medium-low for about 10 minutes (I mix for a bit less if using wheat flour)
  • Remove dough and knead by hand for 1 minute and then put dough into a greased bowl (make sure you cover bowl with saran wrap) and let rise about 1 1/2 hours (or until doubled in size).
  • Remove dough and knead by hand for 1 minute
  • Form dough into desired shape and place in bread pan to let rise for another 45 min - 1 hr (again, keep covered in saran wrap)
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and place small pan of boiling water in oven and keep it there while bread is baking
  • Spread top of dough with 1 T melted butter and then place in oven to bake for about 40 min. or until golden brown on top (sometimes I take it out a bit earlier).
  • Wait for it to cool to cut (or not) and enjoy!

Orange Biscuits

Contributed by Darlene White, Pleasant Hill 2nd Ward

This recipe came from my son when he was taking a cooking class in El Dorado Middle School at least 30 years ago. It always has remained with me. I can still remember him coming home from school and insisting on going to grocery store for the ingredients. He learned a love of cooking from the simple recipes from that class.

Ingredients:

Orange juice
Sugar cubes
1 pkg biscuits in a tube

Directions:
  • Open biscuits and separate
  • Flatten a biscuit to about 3 inches in diameter
  • Dip sugar cube in orange juice and place in center of biscuit then bring sides together and seal firmly around sugar cube
  • Repeat with rest of biscuits placing them on a baking sheet as they are done
  • Bake as directed on package
  • Enjoy while warm
Helpful Tip:
  • Don't leave the sugar cubes in the juice--just dip or the sugar will melt

Ella's Yummy Homemade Dinner Rolls

Contributed by Anita Allison, Richmond 1st Ward

Nothing makes our home more cozy and warm on Thanksgiving Day than the smell of fresh bread baking in the oven. This roll recipe has been a family favorite and tradition for more than 30 years. There always seems to be a few little hands (and big ones too) that can’t help sneaking a warm dinner roll before we sit down to eat. I try to time it so the rolls are still fresh from the oven at mealtime.  Together, we bow our heads in prayer to give heartfelt thanks for all that we have and for one another. It’s always fun to see how much everyone in the family, especially my sweet grandchildren, enjoy eating "Ella’s yummy homemade rolls".

1 pkg. active dry yeast
¼ water (warm)
1 cup milk, scalded
¼ cup sugar
¼ cup shortening
1 tsp. salt
3-½ cups all-purpose flour
1 egg

  • Dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside.
  • Combine scalded milk, sugar, shortening, salt and egg. Mix well and cool to a lukewarm temperature before adding yeast mixture.
  • Add yeast mixture to liquid ingredients and mix well.
  • Add 1 cup of flour and mix well.
  • Gradually add remaining flour.
  • Knead dough for 5-7 minutes until dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Grease the top of the dough. Set dough into a greased bowl and cover with a dish towel or plastic wrap.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1-½ hours or until double.
  • Shape dough into about 20-24 smooth balls.
  • Set on greased baking sheet.
  • Let rolls rise for about 30 minutes or so.
  • Bake in preheated oven at 375° for about 15 minutes or until light brown.
